Article 7 : Usury – Ribâ

  • by

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah  said:

There are seventy degrees of usury, the least of which is equivalent to a man having intercourse with his mother.”

[Ibn Majah # 2274 or 2360, Hasan]

From Hanzhala, the man washed by the angels, (he said that) the Messenger of Allah  said :

“One dirham obtained from usury transaction, and used by a person who knew that it was a result of usury, the sin of it is more terrible than (the sin of, -ed) committing adultery for thirty six times.”

[Ahmad # 22008]

Those who consume interest cannot stand [on the Day of Resurrection] except as one stands who is being beaten by Satan into insanity

Allah destroys interest and gives increase for charities. And Allah does not like every sinning disbeliever.

[Surah Baqarah v.275-6]

O you who have believed, fear Allah and give up what remains [due to you] of interest, if you should be believers.

And if you do not, then be informed of a war [against you] from Allah and His Messenger. But if you repent, you may have your principal – [thus] you do no wrong, nor are you wronged.

[Surah Baqarah v.278-9]

Narrated Abu Huraira, the Prophet () said :

Avoid the seven great destructive sins. They (the people!) asked,O Allah’s Apostle! What are they? He said,

1- To join partners in worship with Allah;

2- to practice sorcery;

3- to kill the life which Allah has forbidden except for a just cause (according to Islamic law);

4- to eat up usury (Riba),

5- to eat up the property of an orphan;

6- to give one’s back to the enemy and fleeing from the battle-field at the time of fighting

7- and to accuse chaste women who never even think of anything touching chastity and are good believers.”

[Sahih Bukhari # 6857]

Jabir said that Allah’s Messenger  cursed the accepter of interest and its payer, and one who records it, and the two witnesses, and he said:

They are all equal.

[Sahih Muslim # 4093, 1598]
