Article 12 : Virtues of the Companions

In a time where some people criticize and look down upon the Companions of the Messenger of Allah , I think it is needful to remember their virtues and status as they are the best of people after the Prophet .

۞ Ayah 1 ۞

And the first forerunners [in the faith] among the Muhajireen and the Ansar and those who followed them with good conduct – Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him, and He has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. That is the great attainment. ﴿1

۞ Ayah 2 ۞

The ones who have believed, emigrated and striven in the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives are greater in rank in the sight of Allah. And it is those who are the attainers [of success].﴿2

۞ Ayah 3 ۞

Certainly was Allah pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you, [O Muhammad], under the tree, and He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down tranquillity upon them and rewarded them with an imminent conquest﴿3

۞ Ayah 4 ۞

Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; and those with him are forceful against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating [in prayer], seeking bounty from Allah and [His] pleasure. Their mark is on their faces from the trace of prostration. That is their description in the Torah. And their description in the Gospel is as a plant which produces its offshoots and strengthens them so they grow firm and stand upon their stalks, delighting the sowers – so that Allah may enrage by them the disbelievers. Allah has promised those who believe and do righteous deeds among them forgiveness and a great reward.﴿4

۞ Ayah 5 ۞

And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger – those will be with the ones upon whom Allah has bestowed favor of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs and the righteous. And excellent are those as companions.﴿5

۞ Ayah 6 ۞

Allah has already forgiven the Prophet and the Muhajireen and the Ansar who followed him in the hour of difficulty after the hearts of a party of them had almost inclined [to doubt], and then He forgave them. Indeed, He was to them Kind and Merciful.﴿6

۞ Ayah 7 ۞

When they were in the cave and he said to his companion, “Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us.” And Allah sent down his tranquillity upon him and supported him with angels you did not see﴿7

۞ Ayah 8 ۞

But those who have believed and emigrated and fought in the cause of Allah and those who gave shelter and aided – it is they who are the believers, truly. For them is forgiveness and noble provision.﴿8

۞ Hadith 1 ۞

A’isha رضي الله عنها said : A man came to the Prophet and said to him : ‘O Messenger of Allah ! You are more beloved to me than myself, my family and children. Sometimes when I am at home, I remember you, and I cannot wait until I come and look at you. When I contemplate about my death and your death, I know that you will be with the Prophets when you enter Paradise. I fear that I might not see you when I enter Paradise.’ The Prophet did not answer him until the Âyah was revealed: {And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger – those will be with the ones upon whom Allah has bestowed favor of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs and the righteous. And excellent are those as companions.}9

۞ Hadith 2 ۞

Anas رضي الله عنه reported Allah’s Messenger as saying to Ubayy b. Ka’b:

Allah has commanded me to recite the Qur’an to you. He said: Did Allah mention me to you by name? He (the Holy Prophet) said: Allah made a mention of your name to me. (On hearing this) Ubayy b. Ka’b wept.10

۞ Hadith 3 ۞

Abu Huraira رضي الله عنه reported Allah’s Messenger as saying:

A person had been driving an ox loaded with luggage. The ox looked towards him and said: I have not been created for this but for lands (i. e. for ploughing the land and for drawing out water from the wells for the purpose of irrigating the lands). The people said with surprise and awe: Hallowed be Allah, does the ox speak? Allah’s Messenger said: I believe it and so do Abu Bakr and ‘Umar. Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger as saying: A shepherd was tendirig the flock when a wolf came there and took away one goat. Tile shepherd pursued it (the wolf) and rescued it (the goat) from that (wolf). The wolf looked towards him and said: Who would save it on the day when there will be no shepherd except me? Thereupon people said: Hallowed be Allah. Thereupon Allah’s Messenger said: I believe in it and so do Abu Bakr and Umar believe.11

[In an other hadith, the narrator adds : “Abu Bakr and Umar رضي الله عنهم were not there”]

۞ Hadith 5 ۞

Narrated Jabir

I heard the Prophet saying, “The Throne (of Allah) shook at the death of Sa`d bin Mu`adh.” Through another group of narrators, Jabir added, “I heard the Prophet  : saying, ‘The Throne of the Beneficent shook because of the death of Sa`d bin Mu`adh.”13

۞ Hadith 6 ۞

Narrated ‘Amr bin Al-As رضي الله عنه :

The Prophet deputed me to read the Army of Dhat-as-Salasil. I came to him and said, “Who is the most beloved person to you?” He said, ” ‘Aisha.” I asked, “Among the men?” He said, “Her father.” I said, “Who then?” He said, “Then `Umar bin Al-Khattab.” He then named other men.14

Rabi’a b.

I was with Allah’s Messenger one night. and I brought him water and what he required. He said to me: Ask (anything you like). I said: I ask your company in Paradise.

Anas b.

Allah’s Messenger set out for Tabuk, appointing ‘Ali رضي الله عنه as his deputy (in Medina). ‘Ali said, “Do you want to leave me with the children and women?”

The Prophet said:

“Will you not be pleased that you will be to me like Aaron to Moses? But there will be no prophet after me.”17

۞ Hadith 10 ۞

Abdur-Rahman bin Yazid narrated that:

Thawban رضي الله عنه said: “The Messenger of Allah said: ‘Who will commit himself to one thing, I will guarantee him paradise?’ I said: ‘I will.’ He said: ‘Do not ask people for anything.’ So Thawban would drop his whip while he was on his mount, and he would not say to anyone: ‘Get that for me’ rather he would dismount and grab it.”18

۞ Hadith 11 ۞

Aisha رضي الله عنها reported: When I saw the Prophet with a cheerful face, I said, “O Messenger of Allah, supplicate to Allah for me.” The Prophet said, “O Allah, forgive Aisha for her past and future sins, in secret and in public.” Aisha laughed so much that her head fell from his lap. The Prophet said to her, “Does my supplication make you happy?” Aisha said, “Why would your supplication not make me happy?” The Prophet said, “By Allah, it is my supplication for my nation in every prayer.”19

۞ Hadith 12 ۞

On the authority of Abu Najeeh al-’Irbaad ibn Saariyah رضي الله عنه who said:

The Messenger of Allah gave us a sermon by which our hearts were filled with fear and tears came to our eyes. So we said, “O Messenger of Allah! It is as though this is a farewell sermon, so counsel us.” He said, “I counsel you to have taqwa (fear) of Allah, and to listen and obey [your leader], even if a slave were to become your ameer. Verily he among you who lives long will see great controversy, so you must keep to my Sunnah and to the Sunnah of the Khulafa ar-Rashideen (the rightly guided caliphs), those who guide to the right way. Cling to it stubbornly [literally: with your molar teeth]. Beware of newly invented matters [in the religion], for verily every bidah (innovation) is misguidance.”20

۞ Hadith 13 ۞

Abu Burda reported on the authority of his father

We offered the sunset prayer along with Allah’s Apostle . We then said: If we sit (along with Allah’s Messenger) and observe night prayer with him it would be very good, so we sat down and he came to us and said: You are still sitting here. I said: Allah’s Messenger, we observed evening prayer with you, then we said: Let us sit down and observe night prayer along with you, whereupon he said: You have done well or you have done right. He then lifted his head towards the sky and it often happened that as he lifted his head towards the sky, he said: “The stars are a source of security for the sky and when the stars disappear there comes to the sky, i. e. (it meets the same fate) as it has been promised (it would plunge into darkness). And I am a source of safety and security to my Companions and when I would go away there would fall to the lot (of my Companions) as they have been promised with and my Companions are a source of security for the Umma and as they would go there would fall to the lot of my Umma as (its people) have been promised.”21

۞ Hadith 14 ۞

Narrated Anas

Zaid bin Haritha came to the Prophet complaining about his wife. The Prophet kept on saying (to him), “Be afraid of Allah and keep your wife.” Aisha said, “If Allah’s Messenger were to conceal anything (of the Qur’an he would have concealed this Verse.” Zainab used to boast before the wives of the Prophet and used to say, “You were given in marriage by your families, while I was married (to the Prophet) by Allah from over seven Heavens.” And Thabit recited, “The Verse:– ‘But (O Muhammad) you did hide in your heart that which Allah was about to make manifest, you did fear the people,’ (33.37) was revealed in connection with Zainab and Zaid bin Haritha.”22

Anas رضي الله عنه reported that after the death of Allah’s Messenger Abu Bakr said to ‘Umar:

“Let us visit Umm Aiman as Allah’s Messenger used to visit her”. As we came to her, she wept. They (Abu Bakr and Umar) said to her: “What makes you weep? What is in store (in the next world) for Allah’s-Messenger is better than (this worldly life)”. She said: “I weep not because I am ignorant of the fact that what is in store for Allah’s Messenger (in the next world) is better than (this world), but I weep because the revelation which came from the Heaven has ceased to come”. Abu Hurayra رضي الله عنه said, “Neither Jew nor Christian has heard me and then not loved me. I wanted my mother to become Muslim, but she refused. I told her about it and she still refused. I went to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said, ‘Pray to Allah for me.’ He did so and I went to her. She was inside the door of the house and said, ‘Abu Hurayra, I have become Muslim.’ I told the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and I asked, ‘Make supplication to Allah for me and my mother.’ He said, ‘O Allah, make people love Abu Hurayra and his mother.'”30

Narrated `Abdullah bin Zaid bin `Asim

When Allah gave to His Apostle the war booty on the day of Hunain, he distributed that booty amongst those whose hearts have been (recently) reconciled (to Islam), but did not give anything to the Ansar. So they seemed to have felt angry and sad as they did not get the same as other people had got. The Prophet then delivered a sermon before them, saying, “O, the assembly of Ansar! Didn’t I find you astray, and then Allah guided you on the Right Path through me? You were divided into groups, and Allah brought you together through me; you were poor and Allah made you rich through me.” Whatever the Prophet said , they (i.e. the Ansar) said, “Allah and his Apostle have more favours to do.” The Prophet said, “What stops you from answering the Messenger of Allah?” But whatever he said to them, they replied, “Allah and His Apostle have more favours to do.” The Prophet then said, “If you wish you could say: ‘You came to us in such-and-such state (at Medina).’ Wouldn’t you be willing to see the people go away with sheep and camels while you go with the Prophet to your homes? But for the migration, I would have been one of the Ansar, and if the people took their way through a valley or mountain pass, I would select the valley or mountain pass of the Ansar. The Ansar are Shiar (i.e. those clothes which are in direct contact with the body and worn inside the other garments), and the people are Dithar (i.e. those clothes which are not in direct contact with the body and are worn over other garments). No doubt, you will see other people favoured over you, so you should be patient till you meet me at the Tank (of Kauthar).31

I said: Allah’s Messenger, supplicate to Allah so that He may instill love of mine and that of my mother too in the believing servants and let our hearts be filled with their love, whereupon Allah’s Messenger said: O Allah, let there be love of these servants of yours, i.e. Abu Huraira and his mother, in the hearts of the believing servants and let their hearts be filled with the love of the believing servants. I will finish this article, by mentioning some words of a great Companion and a with a dua’ that Allah taught us in His Book, a  dua’ that we should ask regularly for the Companions of the Prophet . Companions that spent their precious times, wealth, and their lives to learn, practice, preserve and teach this beautiful religion of Islam.

‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud

“Whoever among you wishes to follow (someone), let him follow one who has died (the Messenger ), for the one who is still alive is not safe from fitnah. The companions of Muhammad were the best of this ummah, the most righteous of heart and the deepest in knowledge and the most straightforward, people whom Allaah chose to accompany His Prophet and establish His religion. So acknowledge their virtue and follow in their footsteps, and adhere as much as you can to their morals and religion, for they were following right guidance.”42

Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful.﴿43

Here are some of the virtues of the Companions mentionned in the Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah, but where are mentionned the virtues and merits of the people who critisize and insult them ?
